'Shahid is a part of my today': Kareena Kapoor

Sassy, talented, straightforward and happy. That's Kareena Kapoor in a nut shell. She talks to Mini Chandran Kurian about the addiction called films and the comfort called Shahid Kapur In Conversation Kareena Kapoor Light as a butterfly, the summer comes to rest on her creamy skin and soft blue eyes. The young girl plunges her fork into the ripe golden mango with carefree abandon, her full-throated laughter suffusing the summer haze with liquorice. Rarely has Kareena Kapoor looked as happy. One of those time cuboids when the polynomials of life seem to have resolved themselves, and faith has healed the soul. "My audiences are connecting with me now," she reveals.

"Even the kids love me. I don't take the youth icon thing too seriously, but it's true that young people love me Thank God! In between, there was that `Poo' phase, when people took my screen image as my real self, that really got me down!" She dimples, "But films like Chameli have proved that whether I deliver hits or not, my talent as an actress is never in doubt. I walked away with all the critical awards for Chameli even my mom was thrilled! Unlike some actresses, I didn't wait till I crossed 30, didn't wait till I was finished with commercial cinema to try out parallel films!"

The next turn on the roundabout has Dev , directed by Govind Nihalani, and Mani Rathnam's much awaited Yuva . " Dev is looking very good, I have a short role but unforgettable," she says with satisfaction. "And do I have to say it, it was such a privilege working with Mani Sir! Yuva has amazing energy, I think Mani Sir was happy with what I did not that he says much!" And then of course, there's Ken Ghosh's Fida with her favourite co- star, Shahid Kapur. The glow in her eyes at the very mention of his name invests her words with a special significance. "Shahid makes me very happy there's no question about that. With him, I am able to do things that I cannot do otherwise like going to a theatre to see films. We sneak in after the movie begins, and no one notices we can be just like other kids! You know, I never had a carefree college life, so it's a big deal to be able to do it now," reveals Kareena. She says with a lilt in her voice, "Shahid is a part of my today. I'm enjoying every moment of this relationship, he is a very grounded guy, and very good-looking too! You should see his loyal female fans!"

Clearly, there is a comfort zone that exists, the kind of zone where peaches ripen into a perfect orange-gold. A perfect period in time, except for that odd regret. "I still have to deliver on those box-office bonanzas, and some of my decisions have led to situations that I never asked for I refused Kal Ho Naa Ho and that upset Karan. I hope things will get back to normal between us, I don't want to lose him as a friend ever. I value him too much," she trails off. But at the moment, all is well, all she can see is a pile of challenging assignments including Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani and Ritoparno Ghosh's next project.

To the standard query today as to whether she'd be interested in cross-over cinema, she throws her head back and laughs uproariously, "Why would I want to do that? Bollywood is good enough for me. Maybe a certain actress wants to try her luck in Hollywood, but that's not for me, thank you! I'm not going to spout some politically correct stuff just to get myself covered in international media!" For this 23-year-old veteran of 16 odd films, it's Bollywood forever. "Oh, I'm so happy Getting up in the morning, seeing my mother's face first thing is like a blessing, then going to the studio, putting on make-up for all those millions who are going to see me on screen Ek ajeeb sa nasha hai"
