Bramalea has a team of nine International Languages teachers who have studied in Canada, Europe and Central
America. Two teachers are recipients of the Governor General's Bronze Medal from their respective Ontario secondary schools.
We have travelled extensively throughout both English and French Canada, Europe including France (and St. Pierre et Miquelon),
Belgium and Spain, Italy and Greece, Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica and Columbia. Some have lived and traveled in North Africa and
the Middle East
International Languages are in demand! Being fluent in French and/or Spanish opens doors to different cultures,
new contacts and additional post-secondary educational and career opportunities. This exciting learning opportunity enables
one to develop a sensitivity to other cultures and peoples, and a renewed awareness of one's own culture. To Canadians, the
most important fact about French is that it is a Canadian language, not a "foreign" language. As one of Canada's official
languages, it is an integral component in political, cultural and social life, as well as in the job market. Being fluent
in Canada's two official languages is key. At Bramalea, Co-operative Education Programs involving students enrolled in senior
level French courses are available. Student work placements could include assisting a French teacher in an elementary school
or completing administrative tasks in a bilingual office. Students and parents are encouraged to investigate these interesting
possibilities with their teacher and the Counselling Services Department at Bramalea.
The French, Spanish and German programs will provide students with learning opportunities that will enable
them, within the limits of their command of structures and vocabulary:
-
to listen to and understand ideas and concepts expressed in French, Spanish
or German;
-
to talk about their experiences, thoughts and feelings with clarity and confidence;
-
to read for pleasure, interest, information and vocabulary enrichment at the level of comprehension appropriate
to their grade and level;
-
to write with ease and an acceptable degree of correctness;
-
to become familiar with the customs, geography, history, institutions, traditions and arts of French
Canada and other French-speaking regions of the world or of Spain and other Spanish-speaking regions of the world;
-
to develop a sensitivity to other cultures and peoples and a renewed awareness of their own culture.
French is offered from grades 9 to 12. Spanish and German are offered at the Grade 10, 11 and 12 level. Bramalea
is the French Immersion site for Peel students living north of Highway 401.
