COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCHOOL

Computerized Attendance Procedure

BSS school community recognizes the importance of attendance.

Regular and punctual attendance is vital to the process of learning and

essential in all courses. To increase the likelihood of success, the

teaching staff and administration are dedicated to monitoring and

helping students to attend regularly and punctually. Chronic absences

or lates to classes and/or homeroom are referred to the alpha vice

principal. Consequences may include parental contact, detentions,

suspension or withdrawal from school.

Absence

Classroom attendance will be reported to the main office on a periodby-

period basis. The attendance recording system will provide

teachers and parents/guardians with a detailed report of attendance for

each class on a daily basis. Students are expected to attend all

timetable classes unless prevented from doing so by personal illness or

family emergency. Failure to do so will be considered a SKIP. Parents

of students under 18 and students (18 and over) must call the 24 Hour

Attendance Phone line at: (905) 793-2411.

In addition to the above, upon returning to school, the student is

responsible for providing a note, signed by a parent/guardian, stating

the reason and duration of the absence. This is given to the

attendance secretary in the attendance office, not the teacher.

Students who are 18 and over may provide their own notes once they

have completed a parent waiver form. However, this privilege will be

removed if it is abused.

Notes Must Include:

  • Signature of a parent/guardian (for students under 18)
  • The date the note was written
  • The date(s) and reason for the absence(s).

Unscheduled Periods – Students on a spare in any period of the day are

to be in the Library or Cafeteria – NOT in the halls or in the parking

lot. Students are encouraged to leave the school if their spare falls on

the last period of the day as the cafeteria is closed for cleaning.

Lates: School begins at 8:33 SHARP.

Any student who arrives after 9:00a.m. will report directly to the

Attendance Office to obtain an admit slip. Students who are late to

class after period one are to report directly to their classroom teachers.

Missing more than half of the class is considered an absence.

Early Leaving/Signing Out

  • Students who must leave school before the end of their regularly

scheduled classes must:

  • Report to the Attendance Office to sign out with a note of
  • permission from parent/guardian before leaving.
  • a parent/guardian call or a number to call in order that the office
  • staff may verify the absence.
  • an appointment slip (doctor, dentist, etc.).
  • health reasons that the school may verify.

Illness

• In case of emergency illness, tell your teacher that you are ill and

then report to the Attendance Office. Never remain in a washroom

or leave the school. A parent/guardian will be contacted in order to

arrange early pick up.

• If a reason cannot be verified, the student will be referred to a vice-

principal for sign out. Students absent from subject classes are

responsible for work missed.

Homeroom

Students must be on time for school. At 8:28, a warning bell will ring.

At 8:33, ALL STUDENTS SHOULD BE IN FIRST PERIOD CLASS,

or students will be recorded as late. Students who arrive during the

morning announcements are to stand quietly in the halls until the end

of all announcements.

Holidays During School Time

Regular attendance is important for success. However, a parent may

apply for a student to “retire temporarily” from school under Ministry

of Education regulations. Parent/student must:

  • Contact the Vice-Principal prior to the expected absence.
  • Complete the vacation form and returned it well in advance

of the expected absence.

  • Avoid all Examination periods.
  • Students are responsible for all missed work.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

If you are moving or have a change of telephone number for home or

parents at work, you must report the new information as soon as

possible to the Attendance Office. This is, by law, a parent’s

responsibility. Changes of Information Forms are located in the

attendance office.

SCHOOL CLOSING DUE TO POOR WEATHER

During the winter months, inclement weather may cause the

disruption of regular school operations. This decision is usually

made by 7:00 a.m. Students can listen to any of the following

radio stations for information: CBC, CFRB, CFTR, CFNY, Q107

CHIN, EZ ROCK, 680 NEWS.

PEEL DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD DISCIPLINE POLICY

The Peel District School Board, while recognizing the authority and

responsibility for discipline as defined within the Education Act, the

Safe School Act and other accompanying regulations, approves the

establishment of a Discipline Policy, which shall:

  • establish and maintain a climate within student activities

which will allow students to learn without unnecessary

distraction;

  • assist students in the recognition of, and respect for, the rights
  • of other persons;
  • assist students in the development of a respect for property;
  • assist students in the achievement of self-discipline.
  • Such a policy shall be administered in accordance with the regulations.

THE FUTURE WE WANT

The Peel District School Board is one of Canada’s largest public school

boards and it continues to grow as the communities of Peel Region

expand. The diversity that is represented by our students, staff and the

community is extensive. Much of that diversity is represented in our

school. To achieve a welcoming and safe learning environment, each

school in Peel is starting a journey called The Future We Want – a

welcoming future that is symbolized by fairness, respect, and

inclusiveness. Our future starts now and it starts with you. You, the

students, play a critical role in shaping the climate of our school. Help

to keep your school safe and welcoming by being respectful of others

who may be different from you because of ability, age, class, faith,

gender, race, or sexual orientation.

SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT

Each school is required to have a Code of Conduct as specified in the

Safe Schools Act, 2000, Section 302, which includes the provincial

standards of behaviour and the mandatory consequences for certain

student actions. School Codes of Conduct must include the

requirements outlined in the Safe Schools Policy #48. The School Code

of Conduct is developed to reflect the expectation that positive

behaviour and good citizenship are norms for Peel students. It is an

expectation that the School Code of Conduct will be reviewed at least

every two years in partnership with students, staff, parents or guardians

and the school council.

The staff at BSS is committed to providing all students with

opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and values necessary to

be capable and concerned citizens in Canadian society. We believe that

Peel students and staff have the right to learn and work in schools

where they feel safe and where there is a climate of mutual respect.

Education is a right, which carries certain responsibilities. Staff and

students of BSS are expected to behave in a considerate manner that

reflects courtesy and respect for themselves, others and property.

Regular attendance and punctuality are of paramount importance

in maintaining positive school tone.

In order for all members of the BSS community to achieve their goals

and aspirations, a structure that outlines behavioural expectations of

students is clearly stated below. These behaviours are directly related to

the goals and values we believe essential for our school community to

function effectively. They also reflect the values of the Peel District

School Board.

Disciplinary procedures, if required, will assist students in attaining se

lf-discipline through escalating consequences and expectations.
